About Mount Vernon Confections
Mickey Miller, MVC chocolatier, has been preparing sweet treats for friends
and family since age 8. After she and her husband, David, began their market gardening business, Pure Prairie Gardens (now
known as "Farmer Dave"), in 2004, Mickey periodically added baked goods to their farmers’ market products
for sale. The Millers are regular suppliers of fruits and vegetables to the Lincoln Café in Mount Vernon. At Christmas
2008, Mickey sold gift boxes of her own fudge recipe through the restaurant.
When she was laid off from her nonprofit public relations job in July 2009, Mickey decided to pursue her obsession
with chocolate and registered for the Professional Chocolatier Program through Ecole Chocolat (www.ecolechocolat.com) in Vancouver, British Columbia. She added chocolate truffles—including recipes
using Pure Prairie Gardens’ own fruits—to the weekly farmers’ market fare and quickly developed a following.
Mickey graduated from the Professional Chocolatier Program in November 2009, and also completed Ecole Chocolat’s “Quality
Control and Keeping Limits” course in spring 2010.
MVC received its food processing plant license from the
State of Iowa in July 2010, which allowed the business to begin selling to wholesale customers. In December 2010, MVC moved
to a commercial kitchen in the First Street Community Center/Old School Shops (known locally as "the old middle
school"), a repurposed building used for retail and office space, as well as community activities.
foot traffic through the building increased, passersby were often drawn to MVC's production kitchen by the smell of chocolate.
The growing interest convinced Mickey to open a small retail space in MVC's kitchen in October 2011. Online ordering
In the summer of 2012, MVC added handmade ice cream to its menu, with several recipes including
fruits from Farmer Dave. That winter, Farmer Dave contributed his creativity to the business, developing recipes for

MVC moved out of Old School Shops to a much larger location two blocks west. Mickey, David, and the staff of Mount Vernon
